Policy Purpose

This policy responds to Transport Canada Regulations regarding safe and responsible use of remotely controlled unmanned aircraft (drones) on Royal Roads University’s campus and surrounding lands. All faculty, students, employees, contractors, volunteers, and the general public located on RRU’s property are governed by this policy.

Policy Statement

RRU’s campus falls within a 9km radius of both the inner harbor seaplane terminal and VIHA’s helipad, situated at Victoria General Hospital. As such recreational drone use is not permitted within the context of Transport Canada’s policy which states:

Do not fly your drone closer than nine km from the centre of an aerodrome (any airport, heliport, seaplane base or anywhere that aircraft take off and land.

Individuals requesting drone filming for commercial or documentary purposes must submit an application to Transport Canada for a ‘Special Flight Operation Certificate’, and contact Campus Services, Events & Film Liaison – rebecca.pregelj@royalroads.ca to confirm date, time and planned location.
